Congratulations to Prof Arash Mafi, whose work on using disordered fibers to transmit images has been selected by Physics World as one of theirTop 10 Breakthroughs of 2014.Prof. Mafi and his colleages showed that their disordered fibers transmitted images with quality comparable to or better than commercially available multicore fibers.

We demonstrate single-mode ZBLAN optical fiber couplers. The controlled tapering procedure leads to coupling ratios of 5%/95% and 14%/86% at a wavelength of 2.2 µm, with insertion losses of 1.6 dB and 1.8 dB, respectively.

We utilize transverse Anderson localization as the waveguiding mechanism in optical fibers with random transverse refractive index profiles.
